Summer Slowdown in Spain: Stay Connected

Spain is beginning another heatwave, with exceptionally high temperatures forecast across several parts of the country.

AEMET expects the heatwave to continue until Thursday, with temperatures potentially exceeding 45°C in isolated areas at its peak. Adapting our routines is not simply sensible; in this heat, it is essential.

We may work at different times, avoid travelling during the hottest part of the day and leave more space for rest. As August approaches, however, there can also be a temptation to put everything on hold until September.

Is that always the best choice?

Summer changes the pace, not the community

Costa Women does not stop because it is summer.

Events continue to take place across our different areas, giving members opportunities to meet, talk and maintain the friendships they have built. Some gatherings may move indoors, begin earlier or take a more informal format, while others continue much as they normally would.

Members also bring visiting friends and family members to events, which we love to see. It gives visitors a chance to experience the Costa Women community and often introduces new people into the conversation.

An early morning beach walk, an indoor lunch, an evening drink, a coffee morning or an online catch-up can all work well during the summer.

The answer is not necessarily to stop meeting. It is to choose times, places and formats that suit the season.

Not everyone goes away in August

August in Spain is often associated with holidays, but life does not come to a complete halt.

Many members continue working. Some have visitors staying with them, while others are settling into a new area and would welcome the chance to meet people.

For women who live alone or whose usual activities have paused, continuing opportunities to connect can be particularly valuable.

This is one reason it is important to keep checking the Costa Women community website as well as the local Facebook groups. New events, discussions and opportunities to connect can still appear throughout the summer.

Members can join conversations, respond to posts, look through upcoming events and contact other women in the community. Even when attending an event is not possible, the website provides another way to remain involved.

August does not have to become a blank month

The same principle applies to business.

There is every reason to take time away, reduce working hours or change the way we structure our days. Rest should not come with guilt attached.

However, assuming that nobody is interested in buying, planning or talking about business during August can become a self-fulfilling decision.

When business owners stop mentioning their services, following up enquiries and having conversations, fewer opportunities are likely to appear. That does not necessarily mean the market has disappeared. It may simply mean the business has become less visible.

People still make decisions during August.

Someone may discover a service while relaxing on holiday. A potential client may finally have time to research something they have been considering for months. Another may begin a conversation in August but wait until September or October to start working together.

The result may not appear immediately. The relationship often begins well before the sale.

What can you continue without overloading yourself?

Maintaining momentum does not mean spending August attached to a laptop.

It might mean continuing to respond to enquiries promptly or sharing one useful post each week. You could arrange a conversation with someone you met at a Costa Women event, follow up with a former client or prepare an autumn offer.

You might review your website and check that it still explains clearly what you do. Perhaps you could update your Costa Women profile, add new information about your business or become more involved in discussions on the community website.

A small amount of focused activity can prevent the first weeks of September becoming a frantic attempt to restart everything at once.

The important point is to make a conscious choice.

What are you taking a break from? What would benefit from continuing? Which conversations could help your business during the final months of the year?

Co-working can help you stay on track

Working alone can make it particularly easy to lose direction during summer. A task that should take an hour can remain untouched for weeks because there is always a reason to leave it until tomorrow.

Costa Women’s weekly co-working sessions offer structure, accountability and company without requiring anyone to work at full speed.

The online co-working session takes place every Monday from 11am to 1pm. Members can choose the task they most need to complete, work alongside other women and leave the session having made genuine progress.

There will also be in-person co-working every Wednesday throughout August at WL Costa Properties in Benalmádena.

The sessions begin at 10am with everyone sharing the one important task they want to work on that morning. Focused working periods are followed by short breaks, helping participants move through projects that can be difficult to complete alone.

There is also space to record videos and take photographs, making the sessions useful for members who want to create content for their businesses.

Anella Hansen, who attended the 2025 summer sessions, said:

“The Costa Women co-working experiment has been a great way to get work done on both small and large tasks and projects. It’s amazing what you can achieve when you work focused for 30 minutes, take a short break and work again.”

Susanne Drews described the sessions as a “productive and inspiring” combination and said she had become used to having the Wednesday sessions as part of her week.

The August in-person sessions run from 10am until 1pm and cost €20 for one session, or €60 for all four August sessions.

Pre-booking is open. Email cowork@costawomen.com to reserve your place.

Arrive in September with something already moving

September has a habit of arriving sooner than expected.

Suddenly, diaries begin filling, events return to their usual rhythm and businesses start planning for the final part of the year. Everything that was postponed until “after the summer” demands attention at once.

August can help reduce that pressure.

It can be a month for rest, family, visitors and a less demanding routine. It can also include useful conversations, enjoyable Costa Women events, a co-working session or a few carefully chosen business actions.

There is no need to choose between pushing through the heat and disappearing completely.

Slow down where you need to. Continue attending the events that work for you. Bring your visitors along. Join conversations on the website and keep a small amount of business activity moving.

Then, when September arrives, you will not be starting again from the beginning.

What would you like to continue during August — and what would you be happy to leave until September?
