Moving to Spain can start with a simple holiday – and for Charlotte Hanson, that trip turned into a whole new life.

Now happily settled in Estepona, Charlotte has built her own real estate business while raising two daughters who are thriving in Spain.

She admits that learning the language was her biggest challenge, but also her greatest reward:

“You can survive here without speaking Spanish, but you will thrive here if you do.”

Read her story.

Why Spain?

My parents moved here originally and I came on holiday. Whoops, I’m still here!

And where are you now?

Estepona. Up and coming coastal town with good business opportunities, easy to access other cities from here, the beach!

Charlotte Hanson

What was the biggest challenge for your move?

Language – I learned it!

Do you have any advice for Women thinking about making the move?

You can survive here without speaking Spanish but you will thrive here if you do.

How do you spend your days?

I run my own real estate business and run around after my two gorgeous girls who are completely integrated into the Spanish public school system but enjoy lots of after school activities with children of all nationalities.

What is something spectacular you would like to achieve in just one day?

Early retirement!

Something you are grateful for?

I had my children late compared to most and I wouldn’t change it for the world. They are the best!

Who would be at your special dinner party?

My dad – he’s extraordinary. Fit as a fiddle at 95 and loving life in Estepona.

Lin Manuel Miranda – he’s just extraordinary. I think he might get on my nerves though so I’d sit him at the other end of the table.

Lord Sugar – I think he’s fascinating but also quite personable. He’d have a great chat with my dad.

Nicola Walker – I love the dramas she is in and the way she seems to act so effortlessly.

Stephen Fry – tells a good story and would probably get on with my husband (someone has to!)

What’s your secret weapon or accomplishment?

Raising two amazing girls in sometimes difficult circumstances.

Do you have a favourite piece of advice?

Having reached a certain age, I am trying to not people please.

One thing you had to bring to Spain and could never give away?

My grandmother’s engagement ring for sentimental reasons.

Do you have a favourite book?

Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh – one of those books that really sticks in my mind from childhood. I remember I read it on the plane to Toronto when I was about 11.

Something you would tell your younger self?

Don’t listen to the teachers who say you won’t amount to anything. The only thing they achieved in doing that was to shatter your self confidence.
