Finding kindness in Spanish community was one reason why Debs Cormode decided to move to Spain. She has set her heart on San Juan de los Terreros as her destination. Find out more about her journey by reading her story.

Why Spain?

My partner and I decided to take a year out and travel in 2020. What a year to choose! We set off in January, but by March, Covid and lockdowns had set in. Luckily we have friends in Spain, and we were allowed to park our motorhome on their land rather than return to the UK. We spent lockdown in Spain, and the kindness of the community we were based together with the weather led to us deciding we’d like to relocate to Spain. Fast forward to 2023, and we have a property in San Juan de los Terreros. We’re currently in the process of sorting visas and hope to relocate later this year.

Tell us more about your new Spanish home?

Three reasons why we chose San Juan de los Terreros area and why you’d love it…

  • the coastline is stunning with beautiful beaches and coves.
  • It’s predominately Spanish and we live learning the language and embracing the culture.
  • And finally it’s close to lovely cities like Aguilas and Murcia for a more lively atmosphere.

What was the biggest challenge for your move?

Visas! I’m still trying to overcome it. My partner is retired, so his visa is straightforward as the NLV. I’m a freelance copywriter, so need a working visa. My contracts are too short for the DNV (contracts need to be over three months), and I also work for a Spanish copywriting agency which would be restricted to 20% of my income on the DNV. But to get the self-employment visa I need a few more Spanish clients. So if anyone is in need of an SEO and UX copywriter, please get in touch!

Do you have any advice for Women thinking about making the move?

Whilst I’m not quite there yet, I’m persevering. The weather, lifestyle and relaxed culture makes for a lovely way of life.

Tell us more about your business?

As a copywriter, I help businesses improve their marketing strategy by ensuring their website is optimised for search engines, is written to encourage conversions and provides a seamless user experience. I also write content (blogs, case studies, social media posts etc).

When not working, my partner and I enjoy hiking and cycling, and we’d love to learn how to play paddle.

I also love to crochet, although there’s not much scope for warm blankets in Southern Spain!

Something you have achieved?

Setting up my business. I taught for 20 years, but during lockdown decided to change my lifestyle. I used the time during lockdown to retrain and worked hard to set up my freelance business. I’m grateful for the opportunities and freedom freelance life brings.

Who would be at your special dinner party?

Ooh this is a tricky one! My degree is in History so I’d invite a few historical figures.

Nelson Mandela would be one, to learn from his resilience.

I’d also invite Elizabeth Garrett, one of the first female doctors. I’d love to learn about her positive attitude and how she pushed through the prejudiced male environment that existed when she was alive.

David Attenborough would be on my list, he must have seen some fascinating sights.

Brian Cox because I’m fascinated by space and Sara Davies to give me some business advice.

Finally, I’d invite David Beckham because he’s hot 😉

What’s your secret weapon or accomplishment?

In business it’s my UX training. Not many copywriters also focus on UX but it’s vital to ensure your users stay frustration free. In life? Probably my empathy skills. I’m good at picking up on what others are feeling.

Do you have a favourite quote?

I’m always saying “Every day is a learning day” Learning something new each day keeps life interesting.

One thing you had to bring to Spain and could never give away?

My teddy bear Bobby!

Do you have a favourite film?

My favourite movie is The Sound of Music. Because who doesn’t love a sing-a-long with Julie Andrews.

Something you would tell your younger self?

Don’t sweat the small stuff.

Trust the Universe as everything will work out in the end.

And learn languages!
