Spain has been just one stop on the journey for Holly Roberts. Read her story and how life travelling has given her the tools she needs to help others find their path abroad.

Why Spain?

I moved to Spain mid pandemic in July 2020 with my family. My husband is a diplomat so we have been lucky to travel the world with his work.

And where are you now?

I’m based in Madrid. It’s an amazing city with incredible weather, wonderful arts & culture and it is so wonderfully liveable.

What was the biggest challenge for your move?

Moving in the middle of a pandemic and finding a network and building a new community. I started spending more time online to find networks and build relationships. Happy to say that as life has opened up again my friendships created online have transferred over to real life!

Do you have any advice for Women thinking about making the move?

Go for it! Life is about the journey!

Anyone who has moved abroad as an expat partner will know that as well as the adventure lies a complex path to navigate, from finding your identity overseas, managing the transitions for you and your family, to figuring out where you fit in to it all. I work with expat women, to help them carve out the life they want abroad, looking at career, balance and purpose.

Something you are grateful for?

So many things, but I’m grateful for the opportunity to live overseas, (so far China, Argentina and Spain) to learn new languages, experience different cultures and meet so many amazing people.

Who would be at your special dinner party?

All the wonderful friends we have met from around the world, and our friends from home. To have a night with them all together would be dreamy.

What’s your secret accomplishment?

My two daughters.

Do you have a favourite song?

‘Who knows where the time goes’ by Sandy Denny & Fairport Convention. It’s a truly beautiful song written by an English folk singer. I sing it myself and it connects with a part of me that acknowledges that life is fleeting, but to have loved, experienced life and to be loved is the most important of all.

Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving. But how can they know it's time for them to go? Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming. I have no thought of time. For who knows where the time goes? Who knows where the time goes? Sad, deserted shore, your fickle friends are leaving. Ah, but then you know it's time for them to go. But I will still be here, I have no thought of leaving. I do not count the time. For who knows where the time goes? Who knows where the time goes? And I am not alone while my love is near me. I know it will be so until it's time to go. So come the storms of winter and then the birds in spring again. I have no fear of time For who knows how my love grows? And who knows where the time goes?

One thing you had to bring to Spain and could never give away?

Our cat Evita…because she is part of our family.

Do you have a favourite film?

Sense & Sensibility – it is beautifully shot and acted and reminds me of my youth.

Something you would tell your younger self?

Follow your passions.
