Planning her move to Coin is Jo Douglas. She believes that Midlife is a time of great personal growth and strength. If we lean on the resilience women possess, we can navigate changes, embrace opportunities, and continue to thrive. Read her story.

Why Spain?

My husband and I met in Mallorca while working on Super Yachts over 20 years ago. We married in Mallorca and bought a small apartment there. When we started a family we wanted a house with land and views but couldn’t afford the island prices. We had friends who lived in Alozaina in Andalusia. We stayed with them and looked around the area and found our dream property at the foothills of the Sierra de las Nieves in the campo de Coin.

And what do you love about your Spanish home?

We lived in Coin for a couple of years, then my husband’s job took us traveling.

We lived in Holland, France, UK and Qatar in the Middle East. We are now back in the UK, and my two boys are teenagers, 19 and 15.

We let our Spanish home out as holiday lets and I host Midlife Retreats there. I plan to move back to our home in Coin in 2 years when my youngest finishes school and host retreats regularly.

It is like paradise where our home is:-

1. It is surrounded by beautiful views

2. We are very central, not far from the airport, the coast, the mountains, the city etc.

3. The local community is super friendly.

What was the biggest challenge for your move?

We haven’t had any challenges so far, but I know we will have when we decide to move in 2 years.

It isn’t as easy as it was before what with Brexit. I will become a resident with my youngest son probable. I will include him in my business if possible, we have a lot of land to take care of.

My eldest will probably stay in the UK and my husband will come in and out with his work. He is still in the yachting industry, a Captain now so he still travels a lot.

Do you have any advice for Women thinking about making the move?

Just do it, it will be the best thing you ever do!

How do you spend your days?

I am a Nutrition, Wellness and Menopause coach. I spend my days coaching ladies who are struggling with menopause symptoms.

I teach and support them to make positive changes in their life, so they are equipped to take control of their symptoms and embrace this beautiful time of their life.

I also host midlife retreats in our beautiful home in Coin, so I fly in and out of Spain from the UK.

I am surrounded by many talented women in Coin, who specialise in many different subject, such as Ayurveda, Sprouting and microgreens, spirulina, Aloe Vera, Yoga, Reiki, Meditation, Breathwork, Massage, Facials and so much more so I am never short of co hosts.

I keep fit with my local running club.

I am a volunteer leader of the women’s beginner group and also teach them HIIT and strength training.

I also manage the Breakfast Club at our local Primary School, getting involved with the local community and making sure all children get a healthy breakfast before school.

Something you are grateful for?

I am very grateful to my family, especially my wonderful husband for supporting me on my business journey. He realised I was passionate about helping women, so he backs me all the way. I couldn’t do what I do and couldn’t have achieved all my qualifications without his support and encouragement. He helped me to believe in myself, forever grateful.

Who would be at your special dinner party?

I would invite David Attenborough. Wow what conversations we would have at the dinner table. I always said to my children, if I could come back as anyone in a second life, it would be David Attenborough. I have always loved travel, animals, the environment, everything Davis stands for.

I would also invite Richard Branson. He is dyslexic like my dad, my husband, myself, and my 2 son’s. We as a family have never let it hold us back, I admire Richard Branson as an entrepreneur and would love for him to sit down and tell my sons about all the opportunities that are waiting for them in the entrepreneurial world.

I would also invite Karren Brady, a strong business woman who I admire and would love to pick her brains. I would also invite 2 wonderful successful ladies who have mentored my on my entrepreneurial journey, Emma Cooper and Michelle Stonhill.

What’s your secret weapon or accomplishment?

My strong work ethic and problem solving skills.

Do you have a favourite quote?

"There is a secret in our culture, and it's not that childbirth is painful. It's that women are strong."

Midlife is a time of great personal growth and strength. This quote captures the essence of that strength and how it can be harnessed to embrace life’s changing phases. It also emphasizes the resilience women possess, which they can draw upon in their midlife to navigate changes, embrace opportunities, and continue to thrive.

One thing you had to bring to Spain and could never give away?

Just me and my family oh and my Cat.🐈

Do you have a favourite book?

“The girl with the dragon Tattoo”. It was a great page turner. Most books that I read now are wellness books for obvious reasons.

Something you would tell your younger self?

Dream big and go for it!
