A big life change happened for Shirley Hunt when she lost her husband. And that triggered a move to Mallorca.  Read her story.

Why Spain?

I joined my Son, who works here, in Mallorca following the loss of my beloved Husband

What was the biggest challenge for your move?

Off loading a house full of furniture and belongings acquired over many years and moving the rest to Mallorca, Webbs to the rescue

Do you have any advice for Women thinking about making the move?

Go for it!  As happy as I’ll ever be here. Met some lovely people, joined ESRA, but Covid lockdowns has slowed down the social life, as it has everywhere no doubt.

Tell us about your days?

I am of retirement age so my days are spent dressmaking.

I was once a professional and made dresses for Queen Charlotte’s Ball.

I spend time walking my little dog and knitting in the evening.

I also have a lot of large pots on my terrace so I garden. Still looking for a little house with a garden.

Something you are grateful for?

A life after the loss of a dearly loved Husband, who I met when I was 17.

Who would be at your special dinner party?

Andrew, my fantastic Son. Jill, moved here from Devon as did I and has been a good friend. Phil, neighbour of Jill and a friend. Saida, neighbour and friend.

What’s your secret accomplishment?

Dressmaking.

Do you have a favourite piece of music?

Red River Rock – learned to jive to this when I was 16, can’t stop jiving when I hear it again.

Mallorca

One thing you had to bring to Spain and could never give away?

Sewing machine. I’ve been sewing since my Grandmother and Aunt first showed me how. Grandma was a seamstress in Buckingham Palace, so I was told.

Something you would tell your younger self?

Leave parents home as soon as possible.

Thank you Shirley Hunt for a snap shot of your life!
