Read her story.
Why Spain?
When I retired in the US, a had a dream of filling my days with giving back to my community and travel. What really happened was two years later I had to return to work because of the cost of living! So, I decided to move to Spain to live a safe and comfortable life!
And where are you now?
I live in Los Pacos and I chose to live here because it is similar in size to the town I lived in, a seaside coastal town called Fairhaven in Massachusetts. Very quiet yet walking distance to all the action in downtown Fuengirola.
Everything I need is just steps away – stores, bakeries, parks and the vet for my pets, just to name a few.
What was the biggest challenge for your move?
The biggest challenge was the paperwork for my visa (which I did on my own) and downsizing my home before the move. It took 6 months to accomplish but with the help of family and friends I got it done.
Do you have any advice for Women thinking about making the move?
It is important to make connections with other people that are making the move as well. That way you have someone to chat and hang out with while you are settling into your new life. I moved here alone and struggled to make connections. Now I find it easier due to groups like this one.
Also start learning Spanish if you haven’t already. I hired a tutor when I arrived and it’s the best decision I’ve made.
How do you spend your days?
I spend my days learning Spanish, exploring other areas of Spain, doing research and relaunching my wellness practice here and also I will be volunteering at a Donkey Rescue in Mijas. I am a Certified Reiki Master Practitioner and Energy Healer.
What is something spectacular you would like to achieve in just one day?
Be fluent in Spanish! That would make my life here ideal.
Something you are grateful for?
I’m grateful that I have learned to be a person that is connected to the world in a peaceful way and that I know how to love my fellow man.
Who would be at your special dinner party?
Caroline my Reiki Master – she set me on my path to healing myself and others.
Helen, my late mother who taught me how to be a strong woman.
My friend Rob who is my best friend, my brother from another mother who holds me up and supports me no matter what.
My counselor Patti who has helped me navigate oceans of grief, self doubt and introduced me to the meditation practices.
What’s your secret weapon?
My secret weapon is the ability to listen, empathize and help people recognize their worth.
Do you have a favourite mantra you live by?
“Walk a mile in my moccasins”. It means a call to empathy, asks you to understand someone else’s experiences and feelings before judging them.
One thing you had to bring to Spain and could never give away?
My dog Lucy and my cat Little Rickee. There is no life for me without them at my side.
Do you have a favourite film/book?
The Wizard of Oz. Because there is no place like home.
Something you would tell your younger self?
Speak up when you have been wronged. Don’t hide your light for anyone.
