Whilst travelling Karin Dijkshoorn realised that life would be an adventure if she moved to Spain. Read her story of how the art of living literally changed her life.
Why Spain?
We were traveling in Brazil when we started talking about how we both had the wish to live abroad for a while and it turned out that we both would love to live in Southern Spain for a while. So that is what we did, almost as soon as we were back from traveling. A few months later we were living in Nerja.
I live in Nerja, which is a special town on the eastern limit of the Costa del Sol. What makes it special is the stunning backdrop of the mountains, the various coves and small beaches and the great building control, not allowing many high rise buildings. The old town has remained its historical charm and people are open en welcoming.

What was the biggest challenge for your move?
I didn’t speak much Spanish, so we started with 8 weeks of intensive Spanish.
Do you have any advice for Women thinking about making the move?
Just do it!

How do you fill your days?
I start most mornings with a workout or a walk outside with my dog Nikita and have some breakfast after that. I then start working with the content of the social media accounts I manage and write newsletters for some of my clients as well. I can decide when I do this, which also gives me the freedom to take a dip in the pool or do some singing if I feel like it.
What is something spectacular you would like to achieve in just one day?
Finish content for each of my clients, making sure they reach their goals each month, taking good care of myself, my animals and my wife and ideally spend some time with a good friend.
Something you are grateful for?
I am very grateful for each day that I get to live. I have had quite some challenges to overcome but keep smiling and enjoying the beauty of life.
Who would be at your special dinner party?
I would invite my friends, Pink as I like her as an artist, but also as a person, very authentic and outspoken, Viola Davis, for her talent, her resilience and beauty as a person, Maya Angelou for her wisdom.
What’s your secret weapon?
My secret weapon is my ability to truly understand other peoples motivation and feelings.
Do you have a piece of advice you live by?
Be grateful every day. It means the world to me as it changes everything.
One thing you had to bring to Spain and could never give away?
Myself 🙂 for the obvious reasons.
Do you have a favourite book?
The Art of Living by Thich Nhat Hanh, it literally changed my life.

Something you would tell your younger self?
Love yourself unconditionally and you are good enough.
