When Kermit sang “It’s not easy being green,” Brussels sprouts the world over identified with his predicament. Because sprouts, like frogs, have had a bad rap. They are the most unappreciated food crop that ever came out of the soil; more scorned than the swede, less tolerated than the turnip, more reviled than the runner bean. But the leafy green spheres that practically everyone loves to hate are about to come into their own. Because December is The Month of the Brussels Sprout. And, as a vital component of Traditional Christmas Lunch, they’ll be cropping up among ‘the trimmings’ at a British restaurant near you. Quite why, at Christmas, everyone rushes out to buy these dwarf cabbages by the kilo is a mystery, given their unpopularity throughout the rest of the year. In 2001, Thomas Cook used them in an advertising campaign promoting Christmas holidays abroad to escape them! Of course, anyone who booked for the Spanish Costas would almost certainly have met their nemesis here where, in British bars from Girona to the Campo de Gibraltar, come December 25th, you’ll be very fortunate indeed to escape the festive fumes (phew wiff) of cooked sprouts. Last week I did the most random book signing at the Jaguar plant in Birmingham – I thought it was going to be easy to get a few of the 2500 men who work there to part with £7.99 for a stocking filler for their wives – wrong! Whether it’s a sign of the times or just pain meanness, who knows? I winced when I heard the sentence ‘she don’t ‘av time to read luv, she’s got to get me dinner on the table and deal with the kids, you know? Gotta go now, need a fag.’ (Imagine thick Brummie accent there). This guy was quite happy to invest the best part of eight quid in the tobacco industry but the whole gesture of giving his ‘missus’ a copy of The Cava Queen, with the accompanying gesture of taking time for herself out to read it, was absolutely lost on him. I sold 14 books… But, on a positive note, an unexpected email came through from the marketing department of Freixenet, who had been told by somebody’s husband who worked at the marketing department at Jaguar, that I had featured a mini-bottle of their cava on my poster. I steeled myself for a ticking off, but far from it – they wanted to help me promote the book on their site.  Considering the rather obvious title, the locality of the novel and the fact they are mentioned as a brand on page 2, I have always considered them a match made in heaven and wanted to come under their radar for a while now.  The important factor for me was that it was my instinct that drove me to call Jaguar, trek up there on a cold nasty day and take a chance. I kept repeating to myself myself all day that there was a reason I was there, something would reveal itself, and sure enough the Freixenet email came through on the drive home. Life has a funny way of delivering twists and turns that keep us on our toes, but by keeping in touch with our instinctive selves, manoeuvring our way through changing times and challenging situations becomes a little easier. I wish all you Costa Cava Queens a wonderful Christmas, and look forward to maybe meeting you all in the new year at some point. If I can organise a book club event with Costa Women, maybe we could get a little sponsorship from a certain cava company? Yes it’s 2012 and most of us, have stood up for CHANGE in some form or another during the last 2 thousand years… We have said NO to discrimination.. colour, race, age, male/female and sexual orientation… and YES to equality… So why oh why is ‘The Church/Religion’ wanting to be different… to be excluded from everything?   In the past we needed the domination, the guidance from above… we were sheep… afraid and lost… But it’s 2012 now and we the people are awakening to our own authentic power and magnificence… we are choosing what we like, what we want to do, what we want to say… we are choosing FREEDOM to be unique and equal… So who the hell do you think you are… Hierarchy of the Church to continue to dismiss women and deny to marry people outside the ‘old fashioned’ man/woman who can give birth to a baby…   God is Love, Marriage is about Love…  Making Love is beautiful to whom ever you choose…   We are no longer cave men and women, afraid of survival and needing answers from outside of ourself… it’s been a long road… we have had many experiences, but we have come to the understanding that we are indeed…intelligent and loving human beings, responsible for ourself and know our answers lie within… so please let us get on with it…  step out of our way… We are the state and YES we challenge the ancient laws which govern The Church… We want CHANGE… We want equality everywhere, for everything… We are worth it!   Is the Church afraid of losing its power… hanging onto old and outdated laws…  I believe it’s time now to accept CHANGE… honour and respect each other and live together in cooperation and harmony…  We are all CREATORS, we can shape our life as we have always dreamed of…  Barbara Franken… Inspiring New Energy Consciousness…
