Costa Women Meet Mette Madsen

After falling in love with Spain during numerous holidays, Mette Madsen and her family decided to make the dream permanent. Drawn by the country’s nature, culture and sunny lifestyle, they spent time experiencing life in Spain before settling in the Fuengirola area – offering both family life and the chance to open a new business just for Women.  Read her story.

Why Spain?

Like so many others, we started with several holidays in Spain. Fell in love with the country, the nature, the weather and the culture. In 2022, my family and I tried living in Spain for 10 months, which was the start of the plan to live here permanently.

And where are you now?

We moved to the Fuengirola area for practical reasons. We wanted to live close to Benalmadena, where we have been so many times before. The area offers many experiences for families, good opportunities to start your own business or find a job. There is a really beautiful coastal area all the way along the Costa del Sol

What was the biggest challenge for your move?

For me, the challenge is to be without family and friends from Denmark. I try to keep in close contact even though I live in Spain. We often do live calls so we can feel like we are seeing each other. Another thing is to start finding the right social connections. I have tried reaching out on social media and other types of groups and it has been successful.

Do you have any advice for Women thinking about making the move?

Consider whether you want to just dream for the rest of your life or whether you want to take action.

What is your passion project?

I am currently working on starting a unique fitness center for women on the Costa Del Sol. Most of my days are spent building the website, flyers, Facebook, Instagram and all the other practical stuff. My plans are to open on November 8th, so I am busy.

What is something spectacular you would like to achieve in just one day?

Peace in the world.

Something you are grateful for?

Raising 3 beautiful children, and married for 25 years (to the same man, LOL)

Who would be at your special dinner party?

I have only one wish. I want to have dinner with my daughter and grandson. I miss them terribly.

What’s your secret weapon?

A balance between patience and stubbornness.

Do you have a favourite mantra you live by?

“Treat others the way you want to be treated.” This means that I always try to meet people with respect and empathy. This creates better relationships both professionally and privately.

One thing you had to bring to Spain and could never give away?

My wedding ring. It is a symbol of love, togetherness, friendship, life partner and support.

Do you have a favourite film?

My favourite movie is Forrest Gump. For me, it’s about destiny.

Something you would tell your younger self?

Mistakes are just lessons – don’t be afraid to make them.
